On the eve of Kyle Larson's second attempt of 'the double,' it seemed appropriate to take a look at this 1/64 scale two pack commemorating last year's (2024) Indy 500 and Coke 600. The set features the two cars Kyle Larson drove, or intended to drive rather, on Sunday, May 26th. The 108th Indy 500 was unfortunately delayed in 2024, and while Larson finished all 200 laps and finished 18th for the Arrow McLaren team, he'd reach the Coke 600 late. Lionel Racing more often than not does things that drive most collectors crazy. The company essentially has a monopoly on the diecast market around Nascar, so it's usually a take it or leave it philosophy that collectors of modern stock cars are limited to. 

But back in 2016, they weren't the only manufacturer, but many fans recognized the superiority of Lionel's Gold Line Gen 6 castings. Those were at the time only available at the racetracks and race team shops. But Lionel recognized an opportunity, and created the Nascar 'Lionel Authentics' line. Even though many race fans recognize Kyle Busch's greatness in the Xfinity series, most probably don't know that he only raced the full season twice. Once was in 2009. That year he claimed the then named, NASCAR Busch Series,  championship. The other was in 2004. That year Kyle Busch competed as a rookie in the series. He started each of the 34 races, and finished the season ranked second. This accomplishment showcased Busch's true potential. Passing through a second-hand store last week, I was thrilled to find a Racing Champions 1/64 scale version of Terry Labonte's 2004 Hendrick Motorsports number 5 Chevy Monte Carlo. The timing was significant, the week before I was able to witness Kyle Larson's throwback to this paint scheme at Darlington during the Goodyear 400. It's a bit shocking to think that Jeff Gordon has been out of a full time Cup race car for nearly a decade. In 2023 Lionel Racing upgraded its Nascar Authentics brand by creating a new sub line, 'Winner's Circle.' These new waves of cars come in a plastic bubble package and feature raced-won versions of race cars from all three of Nascar's top series. 

Now, this isn't the original WInner's Circle line. Long-time collectors like myself remember the heydays of Nascar diecast, and back in the 90's Winner's Circle diecast were 1/64 scale race cars that came fastened to a plastic pit stall complete with 1/64 scale pit crews rushing to make adjustments. This is not that, but it is a noteworthy effort made by Lionel to add a little something extra to their mainline retail product. 2023 was a pretty forgettable year for Chase Elliott. Not only did he break is leg in a snow boarding accident costing him to miss 7 races, but he also crashed out of the Daytona 500, and after getting into an on-track altercation with Denny Hamlin, ended up suspended as well.
