Iberia, A330-300: EC-LXK
I find the 90's Iberia livery to be a top classics airline livery. Perhaps in the top ten g.o.a.t. category. To me, this is a fabulous rendition and the AC A330 casting is a darn good one. Certainly not the best in class, but a worthy  choice for any level of collector.  The combo of livery and mould make this a virtual done deal if you can put up the cash. EC-LXK is a 10 year old aircraft that has been a member of the Iberia fleet only. The airplane's designated name is 'El Salvador.' It is primarily given trans-Atlantic assignments and is line number 1426. Iberia controls twenty-four A330s. Eight are of the -300 variety. Seven are active as of February 2023. There have been five Iberia A330's made in the 1/400 scale, all in the 90's livery, and the best of the five has to be EC-LUB created by Aeroclassics back in 2013. So yes, this does in fact make this model a re-release. It also means that for anyone who didn't get the first rendition, this one should be a nice consolation. 

Iberia, A340-300: EC-GGS
As I've stated on many occasions, the A340 series is one of my very favorite airplanes to travel on. My experiences on them have been outstanding. The long and elegant A340-600 in my mind is associated with the best trans-Atlantic flight I've ever had. While that flight wasn't with Iberia, the A340 is commonly associated with the Spanish airline (they operated 39 of them over the years) and has been replicated in 1/400 scale five times. That means it has occurred equally as frequently in the scale as the A330 counterpart from this wave. It similarly has really only been done well twice, once by Gemini and once by Phoenix. This should in theory be the best rendition yet as long as Aeroclassics maintains quality control while they worked on the tooling.

Eastern Provincial Airways, C-46: CF-NAE
The Aeroclassics C-46 is the only game in town when it comes to this vitally important historical aircraft. It has been great to see the half-dozen C-46s that have made it off the AC production line in the last calendar year. Thankfully we are still getting more included the two C-46s from this month. The C-46 is obviously an important historical airplane. It made a significant impact during WW2 and contributed greatly on a civilian level after the war as commercial air travel was normalized. Eastern Provincial Airways was established 1949 precisely during this normalization period and was responsible for providing that infrastructure to many remote locations around Eastern Canada. They continued to operate into the Jet Age doing the same until 1986. This seems to be another great rendition of a classic prop. The printing and paint work look top notch. The only slight concern I have is the vertical stab seam which oddly pops up at the front as seen below. 

Pacific Western, C-46: CF-HYI
The other C-46 this month is also a Canadian. Pacific Western shares a very similar pedigree as Eastern Provincial Airways. It too was an airline that ushered in the era of civilian air travel. Pacific Western however developed their operations far further than EPA and developed a much larger fleet of aircraft over time. That is translated into 1/400 scale by the sheer number of models available respectively. EPA has 8 models representing it in the scale. PW has nearly 20. Climbing out of the minutia, this C-46 looks nice. Again, the paint and printing detail are looking good on this sample and even better, the vertical stabilizer looks to be properly attached. It seems like AC took the time to do these C-46 models right and both should be considered. Neither one seems to be effected either by the recent 'pointy-nose' syndrome that has plagued the brand t=over the past year. 

Iran Air, 727-100: EP-IRA
If only someone would invest some cash in this casting... Aeroclassics brings back it's 727-100 mould in 2023 as is. They used the 727-100 mould twice in 2022. The first use was a 'Trump' titled former Eastern 727, the later, the now infamous 'pp' Philippines Airlines. So, in 2023 we've already equalled the 2022 quota with this Iranian 727-100 and the Piedmont 727 I'll discuss in a moment. So first of all, the good. The last 727-100's from AC have, in my opinion, been largely impacted by the unusual 'pointy-nose syndrome' That surely seems to have been taken care of while looking at this sample casting. While I'm looking at that particular area, it seems that most if the nose area paint and printing looks pretty good. Moving down the model, it's notable, and sad that Aeroclassics don't electroplate these 727s. This model would really pop with the appropriate chrome. Other details look up to snuff as well. The window line, engine detailing and vertical stab paint and printing look goos too. Perhaps the Iranian flag looks like it might be a little crooked, slanting downward towards the right, but again that's minor when considering that no one else is making 727-100s. Even if someone else had a 727-100 mould, it would probably take them years to get to a livery like this, so if it is interesting to you, be sure to snag this one. 

Piedmont, 727-100: N838N
Most big names in 1/400 have helped to cover virtually every airplane that the Winston-Salem based airline flew over the course of the airline's 41 year history. Virtually every airplane that is except for perhaps the most important. Piedmont began, like most 1940's startups, in the propellor age, but it was the 727-100 that delivered this classic airline into the jet age. according to web databases, there have been about 24 different 1/400 scale models made to represent Piedmont. None of these until now is a 727-100. This airplane fills a significant gap in representing Piedmont's history. Like the Iranian 727-100 the model looks pretty good. 

Ukraine International, 737-200: UR-GAC
Ukraine International has been around since the 1990's but they've only recently gotten much attention in 1/400. Aeroclassics have put a focus on Ukrainian aviation presumably in part because of how Ukraine has become the center of international news thanks in large part to the war that Russia has waged on the former soviet state. It's great to see the continued use of the AC 737-200 mould. As a reminder, the mould is a slot-in casting and largely AC manages the quality well. I've gone ahead and sent away for this model for a few reasons. One is that this mould does seem to have a much more normal nose cone compared to 737-2s from last year. Another is that Ukraine International is a rarely replicated airline in 1/400. One slightly less positive remark is that the usual color issues seem to be consistent in that the Ukrainian blue is too dark. It will be interesting to have this one in hand.

SAS, DC-9-32: SE-DBZ
While some of this month's releases seem to ave had their nose cone issues resolved, this DC-9 does not. The SAS viking long boat livery is a personal favorite. But the pointy nose move this release farther down the list of priorities. Two other SAS DC-9s were offered last year, one registered in Denmark, the other, Norway. This one registered in Sweden completes the trifecta. It is known the Aeroclassics DC-9-30 is the greatest in show. The model however is spoiled in lack-luster production like it's peers. Nice idea, bad execution. This airplane was line numb er 149. It was delivered to SAS in 1967 and returned to the States in 1981. The airliner finally served with Continental Airlines until 1993 when it was retired. Even though SAS operated dozens of DC-9s, only 7 were-30s.

Balair, DC-10-30: HB-IHK
I'm sure the day will come where 1/400 scale Aeroclassics DC-10s will be obsolete in the name of modern moulds and superior graphics. But that day has not yet come. The Aeroclassics DC-10s are the best anyone can get right now and as is true with many of their models, they are the only ones making this airplane. Now, AC has made plenty of DC-10s recently, but the trouble is that many are very niche. Out of the six DC-10s this year, only one of them is truly mainstream (Thai DC-10-30, HS-TMC). While the DC-10 remains in it's own category because no one else is producing the model, going this far into the b-sides catalog of the airplane is a little extreme. The Balair DC-10s this month look far better than some of the other French charter DC-10s from last year, but unless you're an Airberlin or Swiss aviation nut, there's not a lot of reason to seek this model out. This certainly plays into the hands of long time collectors, but over a week after these have hit the market, they are still readily available. 

Balair, DC-10-30: HB-IHK
At least Aeroclassics have done the decent thing and made both of the prominent Balair liveries that airline flew between 1979 and the 1990's. Balair is a minor European airline surprisingly well covered in 1/400. In fact this DC-10 has been done before in both liveries by Dragon and Phoenix respectively. I've read that there is some kind of issue with the black titles on this one. Perhaps it has to do with the slant of the font? I can't quite put my figure on the issue. Either way, either version is probably ok enough. This one is also low on my over-all list  of priorities but the Swiss cross and bright red cheatline sure look nice. 

Hawaii Express, DC-10-10: N905WA
​I had a pretty good feeling that when the Air Hawaii turned up last month that we'd finally get this tropical treat soon after. The short lived Hawaii Express (1982-1983) at least provided us with a fantastic livery dripping in 80's goodness and the pineapple on the tail is iconic. It's been 20 years since a Hawaii Express DC-10 has been available at retailers. The last one made by Jet-Ex sold out long ago. I've been hoping for this one for the better part of a decade as I got into 1/400 back in 2009. It seems like Aeroclassics have absolutely nailed this model. It's shocking this sku is still available over a week after release. So far, this is my favorite release of 2023. 

Northwest Airlines, DC-10-30: N240NW
One of the most popular models this month was unsurprisingly the Northwest DC-10. Four DC-10s this month is a nice spread, and I'm sure this one will excite many. There's always been something about the various Northwest liveries that Aeroclassics makes that just seem a tad off to me. The various bowling shoe models from a few years back all struggle by being too dark. This model looks great in the details and mould categories, but I'm not a fan of the flake paint that AC uses on liveries such as this one and the new American Airlines livery. This is a personal taste issue more than a quality issue however, and I know this will be one offering this month that is going to make a lot of people pretty happy. A solid choice by AC and a collectable worthy effort. 

Aeroflot, IL-62M: CCCP-86492
Gemini Jets are the owners of the sole IL-62 mould in in 1/400 scale. The casting has remained relatively unchanged since 2006 when it was first put into production. They have lent the casting to JC Wings a few times over the last few years, but altogether there have only ever been about 20 releases and this will be the 16th for GJ. There have been 2 previously released Aeroflot IL-62Ms. Only one of those was registered as "CCCP." CCCP-86485, (which Gemini released in 2013 with Olympic carrier titles), has a known history as a model prone to 'zinc-rot.' Gemini are surly aware of this and are offering a reprint so-to-speak as a way for people to replace their disintegrating collectables. I forecast that baring any production issues, this will be a good seller and a nice addition to those establishing Soviet fleets. 

American Airlines, Boeing 787-9: N835AN/ (Flaps Down Configuration)
American Airlines operate some 22 Boeing 787-900s. They also operate a further 33 Boeing 787-800s with  more on the way. As a major dependent of the type, it's interesting to see that only four 787-900s have been made in 400 scale and two of those have been on the old, seemingly now retired, Gemini casting which began circulating in 2014. Thankfully, the likes of new players such as AV400 and NG Models have forced Gemini to adopt the use of the far superior JC Wings mould. The implementation of this chassis also allows for a flaps down variant that GJ has fortunately made good use of. I missed out on the American 787-9 from 2020 that NG Models produced. So for that reason, I'll be anxiously seeking this model. Unless you have the NG version, you should be looking for this one in whatever configuration you can get it in.

British Airways, Airbus A380-800: G-XLEL
​In the same way that the A380 jumbo's best days are in the past, so too does it seem like an A380 from Gemini is a bit old fashioned. Last week, collectors world wide observed the debut of the elite looking A380 from AV400. The mould features state of the art casting as well as magnetic gear that can be removed. You can have all of that for a dollar more retailing at around $57 USD. Why someone would place a pre-order for one of these is beyond me. Most people who are interested in the A380, or British Airways, or both probably already have one of these at this point, and if you don't, just wait a bit longer. I assure you it will be worth it. 

Eastern Airlines, L-188 Electra: N5507
​I was surprised to learn that Gemini Jets have only made about six L-188 Electras in 1/400 scale. Competitor Aeroclassics have made well over 100. But the AC mould isn't necessarily the better bet even though this airplane would seem to be part of their skill set. (The Gemini Jets mould has a much nicer wing-join seam. That basis along is enough to make one mould better than another). This airplane in fact was replicated by Aeroclassics back in 2004 when AC debuted its second attempt at the L-188 casting in 1/400. Their first go at an L-188 would be recognizable by the hand applied decals those models had. Gemini has been using a casting originally created by Jet-X in 2008 (and now owned by JC Wings) to make their recent L-188s. The mould is in my opinion better, but there have been a few instances where some very suspect construction has sabotaged opportunities. Poorly formed wheels, crooked gear legs, and even awkward gear lengths have distorted the finished product to represent something other than a proper L-188. I'm hoping for the best here. 

Emirates, 777-9X: A6-EZA
Emirates, by far and away, have the most invested in the 777X program. The airline utilizes nearly 150 triple sevens and the active fleet is past an average of ten years old. This means that the mega-airline that is the fifth largest in terms of countries served worldwide (roughly 78 different nations) will be looking to replace and upgrade it's existing fleet in the next ten years. Boeing has responded in kind by developing the 777 with modern technology and engineering. JC Wings also responded by developing the only known moulds for the 777-9X back in 2020 (one for wing tips up, one for them down). The mould however has only been used once (tips up) and twice (tips down) to represent both 777-9X testbeds. I'm always happy to see when Gemini utilizes newer JC Wings moulds. It's not surprising of course to see that the first airline getting representation in Emirates both considering the size of their order with Boeing and their relationship with Gemini Jets. I haven't bought an Emirates model in a long time. Maybe these will justify a purchase.

Emirates SkyCargo, 777F: A6-EFG
There are two freighters this month from Gemini Jets. The first of which is this 777F operated by Emirates' SkyCargo division. Emirates operates eleven 777F freighters, but this isn't one of them. A6-EFG was dismissed from the cargo fleet in August of 2022, so it is surprising that Gemini have chosen this registration. The airframe is now operated by AeroLogic. Gladly though, Gemini is avoiding the mundane by giving this the 'interactive' treatment. This will be the third installment on this series for GJ. It follows a Fedex 77FF, and a DHL 777F with the same features (open or closed cargo bay doors).

Fedex, 767-300F: N104FE
2014, 2015, and 2018 saw Gemini Jets release N101FE, N102FE, & N103FE respectively. Based on that schedule, it is certainly about time for another 767 Fedex freighter. Fedex operates one hundred and twenty-five 767s. They are ultra critical to the Fedex network. There isn't a whole lot to say about this model as it is essentially a re-release. The 1/1 was built in 2013 and has only ever worn purple, orange, and white. For this model, execution will be everything. 

Sun Country Airlines, 737-800: N842SY
N842SY was originally delivered to Thomson Airways, (now TUI Airways Limited) in 2012. The world's largest airline charter company has made a habit lending and leasing their 737s to American leisure airline Sun Country for years and in this case has permanently sold ship number 3955 to SY in 2021. Sun Country 737s in this new livery have become quite a hot commodity lately. This is in large measure thanks to new moulds from NG Models and Panda models which have revealed new opportunities. From 2001-2019, only Gemini Jets released Sun Country 737s. Just twice were they put on the market and remained available from many retailers. Since 2019, there have been eight SY models released across the board, and this makes nine. NG Models was the first to tackle this technical topographical livery in 2020 (I wrote about their version giving it a full review, here). Panda Models then tried their hand quite successfully at it in 2022. Now in 2023 we will see what Gemini can do. I doubt that what Gemini makes will be able to compete with either of the other two, but the Gemini 737-800 mould isn't bad when constructed well. The proof is in the pudding however, so we'll see. The only other thing to discuss here is the special banner. I've only been able to find a few pictures of what this looks like in 1/1. I'm not crazy about the add-on, but I'm sure this will be enough to entice completionists. 

World Atlantic Airlines, MD-83: N808WA
There aren't many 'Mad Dogs' left over American skies. As Delta, American, and Allegiant have all phased out their fleets. But six still remain in service with World Atlantic. N808WA, a 32 year old MD-83 has continued to fly for the small charter airline. This is one of those obscure releases that highlight all the possibilities in 1/400. I love the livery. It walks the line between tropical and basic, but the unique bandit mask around the flight deck windows gives this airplane a competitive and aggressive posture. It also highlights the opportunity for someone else to develop a more accurate and competitive mould. Gemini continues to use the one they have and they picked a good subject. I'm looking forward to this one. 

USAF Boeing B-52 Stratofortress: 60-0044 'Minot AFB'
As always, I don't focus or much care for MACs in 1/400. Frankly, they are too tempting. I may one day start to chase these but you have to have limitations. The Gemini B-52 mould is certainly nice to have. It isn't anything revolutionary, nor does it look like it was carefully developed. You can have one of these this month however. It will be the second copy of Gemini's B-52 mould. 

Conclusion: 
This is a good start from the Las Vegas based company. Gemini Jets has had two main issues in recent times. Creativity, and quality have been major focal points. With inflation and global commodities markets going completely off the chain, models have become a serious luxury. Therefore, to commit money to a product, it better be good. I think Gemini Jets have done enough to buy into the product this month. But ultimately, it's down to the collector. Time will tell!

Austrian Airlines, A320: OE-LBU
Austrian Airlines is one of those Euro carriers that never seems to quite garner the attention you might expect. The airline currently operates 63 airplanes and 27 of those are A320s. They type is clearly meaningful to the company and their strategic goals. This particular aircraft is in it's 22nd year of service and was recently repainted in 2019. I actually love this livery and what's quite surprising is that to my knowledge, a standard early 2000's OS A320 has never been made. The last time this livery was in production was back in 2019 when Panda made a nice pair of 737-600s. That makes this a very important offering this month and one I'm keen on picking up.

Southwest Airlines, 737 Max 8: N871HK "Retro" 'Herbert D. Kelleher'
Is it even worth trying to convince anyone at this point how bad the 737 Max 8 AC mould is? What's now worse is that Aeroclassics continues to refine the post production castings to have properly represented nosecones across almost their entire line of products. This A320 looks to closely resemble the issues with last month's AeroSvit. To really make this thing un-buyable however, AC has gone the extra mile to incorrectly use black paint to indicate the registration. I'm sure this does nothing though to convince someone who has already shown a willingness to purchase such a lackluster effort. At least we live in a time where vastly superior Max 7/8/9 moulds exist. 

Continental Airlines, DC-9-32: N3514T '1980's Contrails (Black Meatball)'
The Aeroclassics DC-9 mould is every bit as good as the the Max 8 is bad. This stock photo appears to reveal that some of the same 'point nose syndrome' features are going to be seen. This however is a minor detractor. No one else is making DC-9s right now. This is a good opportunity for anyone who missed out on earlier versions of this livery from the likes of the Seattle Model Company back in 2004. That example came in a set of two. The other in that set a, 'red meatball' compatriot just like the other Continental release this month. A virtual do-over. This aircraft was originally delivered to Texas International Airlines in 1979. It then joined the CO fleet in 1982 and stayed there before one last tour with Aero California in 1999. The aircraft seems to have been scrapped in 2008. 

Continental Airlines, DC-9-32: N543NY '1980's Contrails (Red Meatball)'
Chronologically speaking, the red meatball, or the more accuratly named 'contrails' livery followed right behind the black meatball in the 1980's era. It looks like another of the common issues that have hung around on the Aeroclassics production line is the misalignment of print lines from the tail stabilizer to the fuselage. The problem is more evident on this model compared to the other DC-9 this month. Again, this model is a nice offering in that it's a re-release to a degree. For people like me who have recently become more interested in classics, it's a second chance to pick these up.

Air Hawaii, DC-10-10: N904WA
A tropical treat! Air Hawaii has never been recreated in 1/400 scale. Air Hawaii was a scheduled airline between Hawaii and focus cities, L.A. and San Francisco between 1985 and 1986. It was a startup managed by Michael J. Hartley, they same person behind The Hawaii Express (1982-1983). To disambiguate the airline from two others with the same name, this Air Hawaii is the only one that ever transported passengers from the islands to the main land U.S. While I do love when added details like ariels and radomes are added to model airplanes, I won't pick on them when they are absent so long as everything else on the model is done right. The Aeroclassics DC-10 mould is probably still the best one ever made and honors Air Hawaii well. A top pick from this release for me. 

Thai Airways International, DC-10-30: HS-TMC
The rear centered landing gear and CF6-50's help to clearly distinguish this three-engined wide body aircraft. Thai Airways operated a total of nine DC-10s. All of which wore a version of this livery. There have been four previously made DC-10s for TG in 1/400 scale. The earliest of which was a product made by Tucano Line in 2002 (HS-TMC). A second model was produced by Aeroclassics in 2008 (HS-TMA). Then in 2012, Inflight 400 created two more 1990's Thai DC-10s on their far inferior mould (HS-TGD and TGE). This will be the second Thai DC-10 for Aeroclassics and it seems to be the better one as this version carries the 'Thai' titles on the central tail mounted engine. Baring any production flaws noticed by the community. I plan on picking this version up.

U.S. Airways, A330-300: N275AY
As far back as 2000, the 1/400 scale has had a healthy supply of A330s. The first U.S Airways A330 made in 1/400 was in the 1990's navy blue and gray colors. It was made by Dragon Wings and was soon followed by other offerings from Gemini Jets, then Aeroclassics, and most recently NG Models. There have been eleven total U.S. Airways A330s in 1/400 to this point. NG released a U.S. Airways A330-200 earlier this year, but it's been since 2014 that we've gotten a -300. That one was by Gemini Jets. This AC A330-300 mould is vastly superior to that. It looks as though Aeroclassics have largely got it right. The mould carries the model through. While early 2000's models aren't real hot right now, I do forecast that they will be more highly sought after in the coming years. I currently own the earliest A330-300 in these colors, a model produced by Gemini Jets in 2007. I don't have urgent plans to replace that model with this one but it will, I'm sure one day become a higher priority. This aircraft in 1/1 form is sitting in the desert after being withdrawn from service in 2020 during the onset of covid. At over twenty years old, I'm not sure if she'll ever make it out. 

Delta Air Lines, 737-200: N321DL
Aeroclassics have been providing a steady steam of 737-200s in 2022 (23 models to be exact), and that seems like it's likely to continue into 2023. As part of January's releases a pair of 'Colors in Motion' or 'Deltaflot' Delta Air Lines 737s chase an earlier pair from last month wearing the earlier Ron Allen Landor liveries. Delta operated 75 Boeing 737-200s. Believe it or not, this is the first DL 737-200 in this livery unless I'm mistaken. I'm not in a rush to add this model, but it will be interesting to see how that metallic belly paint looks in person seeing has how AC doesn't electroplate their planes. 

Delta Express, 737-200: N325DL
The late 90's saw many U.S. carries try their hand at the emerging LCC market. United with 'United Shuttle,' Continental with 'Continental Lite,' and Delta with 'Delta Express' later 'Delta Song,' were all airlines within and airline. While I wasn't able to secure a specific number, based on the amount of destinations, I'd guess a dozen or more of the Delta 737-200's wore this livery. (A little more about Delta Express can be found 'here' on the Delta Museum website). Yet, only Gemini Jets have produced an example in 1/400 scale. I do own this particular model which came out in 2002 on the adequate, yet inferior Gemini casting. This particular model looks ok but I'm quite sure there should be a red band around the engine cowling. That said, I have been enjoying the fleury of 737-200s lately and these are a nice addition to the fold. Four Delta models in two months is a treat and there's good reason to look for each one. It seems as though AC has mostly done a good job with them. 

A Prefect Pairing:
For whatever the reason, Panda Models seem more than satisfied to stay out of the limelight in the world of 1/400 model airplanes. One would assume a part of that has to do with the messy split  with AeroClassics. One of the casualties of the separation was the best 737-300 mould in the scale to this point. Before the failed relations, Aeroclassics managed to make dozens of great 737-300s. Now, Panda Models has sole use and ownership of this mould and has upgraded the casting to compete in today's modern 1/400 marketplace. Panda 737-300s now come with top of the line printing, updated landing gear, and ariels amount other smaller updates. 

While Panda Models is nowhere near the power house status of companies like Aeroclassics, Gemini Jets, and NG Models, they still demonstrate a dedication to being a 1/400 mainstay and illustrate this through the ever increasing collaboration projects with well known, and some not so well known distributers.

Prairie Diecast came onto the scene in July of 2019 and have steadily gained a foothold in the world of model airplane distribution. They are based in Sherwood Park, Alberta and specialize in reaching customers in Western Canada and the Untied States. They primarily deal with NG Models, AV400, and JC Wings. In keeping competitive however, they have clearly done business with Panda to commission a special 737 available only through their online store. This is becoming a popular move lately as other distributers like Waffle Collectibles, and RM Model Store have commissioned their own models from Panda as well. So without further delay, let's take a closer look at the Prairie Diecast exclusive release, Air Inuit 737-300, C-GFFN by Panda Models.

Air Inuit 737-300: C-GFFN
737, line number 2159 was originally delivered to Ansett Worldwide in 1991. As far as I can see, the airplane was always built to carry both passengers and cargo and it continues to do so to this day. After spending time with Falcon Air and Titan Airways, the airplane arrived at Air Inuit in 2018 and registered C-GFFN. The Air Inuit scheme is really good looking and has a bit of a resemblance to the old Canadian Airlines International livery featuring a Canada goose in full flight. The livery is a bit tricky as in certain light, it can appear orange, and in others, red. I think that Panda has done a good job color matching here and they have beautifully transposed the design. 

Panda did a great job with the important details on this model. The cargo bay door was printed with the perfect intensity to show that it's there, but it doesn't appear so aggressively that it looks bad. 

Note, the mould features that updated landing gear, ariels, and again, the paint and printing looks sublime. I love that the horizontal stabs are painted red on the 1/1 and the 1/400. This is distinctly Canadian, and it certainly makes the model stand out. 

The packaging is another highlight for me. Many folks in the 1/400 world openly mock those that admire box art and packaging, but it is such a huge part of the experience. Not only does the box art look good, but it includes the Prairie Diecast logo. 

Panda & Waffle:
​As I recently explained in a blog entry on the same topic, Panda Models has been focusing on developing relationships with distributors in the model airplane arena. Tensions between Panda and other manufactures are frosty at best. But the effort to alienate Panda from the other 1/400 constructors hasn't been successful. This is in part due to multiple specially commissioned models that are being ordered be specific retailers. 

In the past few months, we've seen a multitude of  A319s, A320s, 737-300s, 737-700s, and 737-800s being made at the request of shop owners. These models always end up exclusively available on the respective e-stores and this can be very beneficial to both Panda and the specific commissioner. 

​RM Models, Prairie Diecast, El Aviador, and Waffle Collectables have all made deals with Panda to produce a wide variety of highly desired, and sometimes obscure models that frankly just wouldn't get made. Without the muscle of the distribution companies, consumer demand is only sometimes enough to send a model concept onto the production queue. 

If I've been managing my math, Waffle Collectibles is set to receive their 3rd, 4th, and 5th specially commissioned 1/400s from Panda Model. Each of these models have been produced in 2022. The first was a  Sun Country 737-700, the one pictured just above, registered N716SY. The second, another Sun Country 737-800 registered N842SY. The other three were just announced. Each of these are classic in nature and are based on the nicely retooled 737-300 mould owned by Panda. 

​Southwest 737-300: N654SW
Built and delivered to Southwest Airlines in 1997, line number 2918 is shown here below on touch down. The tricky 'mustard rocket' or 'desert sand' color of this livery is very tricky to replicate and is known to look very different depending on the light. It's certainly difficult to determine exactly where on the spectrum the color fits. It matters more to me how the model looks once side by side with stablemates. There's really only one way to determine that. 

Southwest Airlines 737-300: N629SW
Line number 2796 was delivered to Southwest Airlines in 1996. Essentially a gift to itself, the airplane represent's the airline's 25th anniversary. The costly buffing and polishing of bare metal surfaces was abandoned in favor of silver paint. The airframe is still active today flying on behalf of iAero Airways. The sample looks pretty clean and the livery details transition from tail to fuselage quite beautifully. 

Southwest 737-300: N609SW 'California One'
​Coming off of the production line as number 2744, the elder statesmen of the trio is likely the most historic. The ultra recognizable California One livery first graced the American skies in 1995. The airplane, like many 737s spent its entire career with Southwest. The frame was completely used up and retired from service in 2017, then scrapped. The California One color carrying responsibilities were passed on to a younger member of the SW fleet that year, N943SW.

Conclusion:
With the these rapid fire special retailer releases happening all the time it is truly impossible to keep up. Hard choices await most collectors these days and this trifecta contributes to the ire. Say what you will about Panda, but by the looks of things they did a really nice job with these. They are very high up on my list.

For clarity, Gemini Jets and JC Wings have perhaps the strongest co-dependance in 1/400 scale. In the last four or five years, collectors have seen a steady merge between the two companies with JC Wings relying strongly on Gemini's distribution network and a good collection of their existing moulds, like this month's 767-300 for example. Similarly, Gemini has relied on newly developed moulds from JC Wings in order to keep their products fresh and current. This has made it quite apparent that the two share a means of production. My biggest issue is that while JC wings tends to have fewer Quality Control issues than Gemini, chipped paint, loose parts, and cooked gears are just a few of the disappointments that may come with unboxing a brand new JC Wings model.

Either way, the best thing about JC Wings is that while they put out a lot bearing models, they also make some really obscure models that you most likely will never see other companies create. This month has it's fair share of snoozers, but there are a few eye catchers as well. I was able to gather a handful of production photos to take a look at, and some of what I see is worth making a note of. 

Air Berlin A320: D-ABNW "Last Flight"
When I first started collecting in 1/400 scale. I didn't know a lot about airlines in Europe. But around that time, Gemini Jets released an Air Berlin A330 that I really liked. I acquired the model and that in part spurred my interest in European aviation. For many years, Air Berlin was tragically underrepresented and it wasn't until the airline neared its end in 2017 and in the time after that more Air Berlin models were made. This model looks pretty good. It's surely on the more recent slot in version of the Gemini A320 mould. It has its faults and it isn't the sharpest representation of a A320 in 1/400. But it does look best without the NEO engines and sharklets that are slapped on it from time to time. Obviously the marketers chose a properly constructed copy to take close-ups of. Considering the airplane itself is quite historical, it makes the model certainly considerable.

​*One interesting side note, is that if you take a look at the box, printed on the side are the other Air Berlin A320s, two of which have been made, but D-ABFK has not. JC Wings did make the airplane in 1/200 scale. But not 1/400, so perhaps this hints at another Air Berlin A320 yet to come. 

Arkia A321NEO: 4X-AGH
In the first of several instances this month, the Arkia has already been produced by Aeroclassics. The airframe built in 2018 is on lease to Arkia and is one of several A321s they operate. Once again, as can be seen on the box, more Arkia Airbuses in various colors will likely be soon available. While there are three pictured, Arkia inly operates two of these. So it will be interesting to see how that pans out as well as I'm not sure if Arkia have more A321s on order. 

Here is a close comparison to the Aeroclassics version which was released back in January 2020. Aeroclassics is on the left, JC is on the right. As you can see, the Aeroclassics version is an abomination. The colors are wrong, and the tricky stripes on the fuselage and the vertical stab are way off. While the AC version mould is stronger, the JC Wings version is the one I'd have. 

Cathay Pacific Cargo 747-8: B-LJA " Hong Kong Trader"
The queen of the skies in her final form continues to necessitate reproduction. B-LJA has already be released, specifically, it has already been made by JC themselves and perhaps this is more of a situation where an extra couple of cases were located in the warehouse. The positives here are that the model is really good looking for the most part and it is interactive. If you're not into that type of a thing then there is little that's going to grab your attention here. Cathy always sells well and this particular logo jet has its own interesting style and will likely be bought up. 

China Air Force A319: B-4092
This is a re-hash of something already done by Panda Models. Really, there's not a ton to speak of here. The Panda/ Aeroclassics mould is far stronger in my opinion, but there also looks to be very little wrong with this copy. I personally still consider this strictly  a military aircraft, and so it is in the no-fly zone for me. We must have boundaries in this hobby of some sort. The airplane was built in 2013 and is eight years old at the time of this article. Not bad looking, but not remarkable either. 

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines 767-300ER: PH-BZK
In this set, we get to see JC Wings do something it usually doesn't. That is, it's nice to see JC dip into the older, more classic liveries and airplanes. About a year ago or so, JC Wings delivered a very nice Iberia 767-300 on the Gemini mould. It seems they are back at that this and its a good idea. PH-BZK was delivered new to KLM in 1997. It seems to have been on a ten year lease as in 2007, the airplane was collected by Air Astana, and then seven years later, in 2014, it changed hands once more to UT Aviation. It is now currently still in Russian hands and is registered as RA-73032. Gladly we get this airplane in it's finest form. The only drawbacks are that the mould continues to age. Wing seams, thicker features, and perhaps even some suspicious flight deck window printing are detractors. 

Lion Air A330-900NEO: PK-LEJ
This is certainly a repeat. JC Wings have already produced a Lion Air A330-900NEO as the box below clearly illustrates. I have a handful of the JC Wings A330-900s and they really are very nice models. This once again begs the question, what exactly are JC building now, as this is easily another model that could have been sitting in a warehouse for a long, long time. Coming in at just three years old, PK-LEJ is an important part of Lion Air's efforts to explain to the world it intends on keep a modern fleet and that the airline is here to compete well into the next decade. While the livery itself is notoriously bland, the mould's elegance keeps the model in eye catcher territory. 

LOT Polish Airlines 767-300: SP-LPB
A strong looking 767 here. It is a nice compliment, perhaps even a stronger example of what JC Wings are capable of. LOT models are not commonly done and I'm really looking forward to picking this one up. We run into the same issues with this model as the last one, the mould, the features, etc. But all in all, if you've been hoping for one of these, here you go. The airplane spent it's entire commercial career with LOT until about 2005 when it was outfitted for private charter service. It seems to me this airplane is now used to transport the Sevilla FC. 

Maleth Aero A340-600: 9H-PPE "Support Our NHS"
A simple description for a simple livery. This is obviously an ex-Virgin Atlantic airways airframe. Originally delivered to them in 2006, the airplane served with Virgin until 2019 when it was pulled from service and taken up by Maleth Aero. The Malta based company has been in operation since 2011 and has made a habit of using thrift buying tactics to build its fleet. I find this to be a particularity plain and boring livery. I couldn't imagine many people have a need for one of these. 

Royal Air Maroc 787-9: CN-RGX (Flaps up/Flaps Down)
While the Good Ideas Department in some cases succeeded with this release set, it isn't impressing in others. Royal Air Maroc has been done several times between JC and Phoenix in the past. Apparently the creation of a flaps down mould constitutes a situation worthy of a rerelease. At least JC worked to make sure the registration was different. I admittedly don't have this particular airplane with this particular livery but it isn't one that is hard to come by now, and probably won't be for a long time to come. NG Models will likely take this representative onto their production line one day and with AV400 having a 787 in the works, will likely cover this as well. It is a nice looking model. 

Not Pictured:
The following models were announced without the supply of any stock photos. They either appear on a published listing, or are already listed for sale at some retailers with the use of 1/1 photographs. Only the Etihad A380 is expected to be available in September while all the rest will arrive at a date not yet disclosed to customers.

Conclusion:
While JC Wings seems to be able to manage a very steady supply of models and it they sure look competitive on the surface. But with a closer view, there are only a few subjects from this set that are truly exciting. The 1/400 scale marketplace remains flooded with models and taking a critical look at what everyone out there is making is really important. There are certain details that should not be understated. While there was once a time in 1/400 scale where the arrival of a new mould would achieve unprecedented fanfare, these days it is commonplace. That isn't a reason to lack appreciation. The announcement of a new A300-600 Beluga is exciting, and is the true highlight. 

Airtours 757-200: G-WJAN
Starting operations 1991, Airtours International, which would eventually become MyTravel Airways in 2002, was created by David Crossland. The airline began using MD-80s, but as it grew, added other secondary aircraft creating an interesting collection of small to large body airplanes. The 757s were added to the Airtours fleet in 1993, and this particular airframe has been operated by over a half-dozen companies in its 25 year long service period. It is currently working in style for the eye grabbing SF Airlines based in Shenzhen, China. 

This model is certainly going to have a niche audience, but it seems that so far all the right ingredients are in place. Buchannan Models is certainly driven by a certain era and they are choosing a growing partner who is probably happy to allow BM to take on the risk of making a model that doesn't sell well. In exchange for that risk however, BM is using the best moulds in the game, and they've started out using the actual best moulds in 1/400 scale at the moment. 

Last month's model turned out spectacularly. It is new very hard to find, and has likely sold out. This bodes well for the abstract Airtours release.

​American Airlines 777-300ER: N736AT
For starters this month, there's good news. Gemini must be aware that they are the main show in town that focuses on American Airlines. The new livery looks great in person and in 1/400 scale. Many of the recent hits from Gemini have been American Airlines in the updated colors. With this model being offered in two configurations, it signals the use of the superb JC Wings 777-300 mould. Interestingly, no one besides Gemini has made an attempt at the American 777-300. That is until now. Phoenix models has shown some recent life lately, and they are scheduled to bring one to market in the coming weeks. It should be at least a notable contender to what Gemini has planned.  

Emirates 777-300ER: A6-END
A ten-year-old Emirates 777 gets its first 1/400 treatment and once again, the alternative flap settings illustrate the likelihood of the JC Wings mould. It has also been sometime since a standard Emirates scheme has been made on a 777 and that actually grabs my attention as none of the other twenty three-300s that have been made are on such a high quality chassis. 

Lufthansa Cargo 777-200F: D-ALFA
As has been pointed out by many, this is the first 777 Cargo Luffty that's been made. The issue I have, is that this model isn't currently wearing the new livery. It's understandable why Gemini chose this particular registration, the aircraft's company name is "Good Day, USA." It is sadly however a missed detail that once again begs the question, who is doing the homework for Gemini?! The upside is that this model will be for sure on the dynamite JC mould and perhaps could end up being accurate if the 1/1 version of this airplane is repainted to look like the 1/400. Until that happens though, this is essentially a fantasy model and won't be joining my collection unless someone gave it to me!

Conclusion: 
We've certainly seen better from Gemini Jets, but we've seen worse as well. As is usually the case in the early 2020's for Gemini, it really comes down to two things. Which wide body moulds will be used, and can the factory stay free of mistakes. Of course, you need to give your production team good information to work with, and the incorrectly liveried Lufthansa 777 is a bigger issue. I am most looking forward to the AA triple seven. The Frontier is promising, and the LATAM, and Emirates have some promise as well. 

Uganda Airlines 707-320: 5X-UAL
My main goal in 1/400 scale is to acquire a representative from every country of the world. While I already have the semi-rare DAS Cargo DC-10 Phoenix made back in 2003, it is an 'N' registration, and this is the first ever properly registered 1/400 scale model airplane for Uganda. That's the first highlight. Second best is that it's on the very nice AC 707 mould. Provided that the antenna isn't bent upon arrival, and that factory printing and painting is good (the cheat line is looking a bit suspicious about halfway down), this is one I'm really looking forward to having, and its my top choice this month. This airplane has a fascinating history I'll cover next month.

Philippine Airlines 727-100: RP-C1240
It's good to see that AC is still tinkering around with what is currently the only 727-100 mould on the block. That's where the excitement ends for me though. The printing on the nose of the aircraft doesn't look bad, but it does look way out of place. I'm not sure what's going on with those flight deck windows, but it isn't good. PAL has gotten some decent representation from AC lately with a rather blank F-27 that was distributed in February. Regardless of it's humble appearance this was one of the fastest moving models this month and at this point is virtually sold out. 

United Airlines DC-6s: N37570 & N37594
Aeroclassics is in full on DC-6 mode. They have released 8 of the so far in 2022, and I've managed to add a few of them. Best of which so far has been the Peruvian Faucett from February. While both of these super 6's look ok, minus some problematic over polishing of the nose, the best of the three this month has to be the JAL which I'll get to in a moment. As WWII came to an end and air travel become available to the general public, large people movers such as the DC-6 became ubiquitous at airports all over the world. United operated 90 of these, and the two here are dressed in the masked mainliner livery that distinguished the company in the post war world. There have been well over a dozen United DC-6s in 1/400 scale to date, but just one other that wears this particular scheme. 

Japan Air Lines DC-6: JA6206 "City of Nagoya" 
By the 1950's Japan was in full recovery mode and access to the country from the United States was facilitated by DC-6s just like this one. The aircraft would make the transpacific journey via Wake Island and Honolulu. JAL operated up to ten of these piston engined aircraft and most would be converted to freighters by the end of the 1950's. It's nice to see the grass roots of JAL and United Airlines represented this month.

Indian Airlines F-27: VT-DOL
This next release takes us back to 1964, when VT-DOL was setting up for take off from Madras Airport. When the aircraft reached take off speed, the gear legs were over zealously retracted and unexpectedly, the aircraft touched back down again collapsing onto it's hull. Besides the less than flattering incident, this rather bland scheme just isn't interesting. Aeroclassics have dribbled out a few Indian Airlines models in the last few years, and the only reason you'd pick this up is if you were fleet building, or loved F-27s. Indian Airlines operated up to 17 of these airplanes and several met calamitous endings from various high jackings and foul weather accidents.

French DC-8s: F-BJLA & F-BJLB
The two DC-8s this month are symbolic of a French merger that took place a long time ago. Both airlines eventually destined to be absorbed by Air France. Aeroclassics have been giving us some good lessons on French aviation history of late. Multiple DC-10s, and now some nice DC-8s paint a very nice picture of what the 1960s and 1970s looked like. UTA has gotten plenty of attention in 1/400 scale but this is a first for the far lesser known UAT. This livery however is more symbolic of it's merger with UTA rather than a direct reflection of the airlines actual history as it obviously takes the UTA design and simply adds the UAT titles. The nose on the UTA once again looks very questionable.

American L1011-500s: N509PA & N511PA
I'm not sure what's more head scratching. AC insetting on the continual use of its cringeworthy L1011 moulds, or all the collectors who throw away their money on an inferior mould. Just because the lump of diecast metal in your hand seems to be about right, doesn't mean that it is! There are better options out there for virtually the same price! Nonetheless, if Aeroclassics makes it, we discuss it. On the surface, these don't actually look half bad, and to their credit, these have seemingly sold well. What we don't know and perhaps never will, is how many of each were made. There's just enough fuzz on these photos, and pressured urgency on the collector to make these disappear faster than they should. N509PA was delivered in 1980 and was eventually sold to the RAF, after a lengthy career, its final destination was determined upon her said to GDJ Services. N511PA is still carrying her Pan Am registration but is adorned in her United Colors. The aircraft would go on to serve LTU and then converted to a private transport. The airplane seems to still be situated on the west end of the Fujairah International Airport in the UAE, slowly wasting away in the desert. 

KLM Viscount 800: PH-VIB
​Rounding out the official models this month is the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Viscount 800. KLM operated a number of these in the 1950s to the 1960s. This one was sold to Are Lingus. The mould as we know is certainly good enough. Although the over polishing of the nose which once again can be seen here brings the excitement level down some. The livery looks smart and properly done. As is usually the case, there isn't anyone else making these old propeller airliners, so if this is something that appeals to you, have at it. 

Blue Box (Unlisted) Alaskan 737 Max 8s: N915AK & N932AK
Another common theme of Aeroclassics release sets is to include a few 'masked' models that look specially designed to circumnavigate royalties to airlines. This month, two brand new Max 8s in special liveries celebrating northwest mainstays are available on the sub-par AC Max 8 mould. One carries the logo of the new NHL team, the Seattle Kraken, and the other named "West Coast Wonders" recognizes some of the amazing fauna found of the Alaskan coast, the Orca whale. These appear to be very good sellers, but with the Gemini/JC mould in existence, and a new Max 8 mould from NG on the way, why? Both of these manufacturers are happy to produce Alaska Airlines models. It shouldn't be that long of a wait for something far better. 

Airbus Freighters: XA-LRL & N650FE
The best A300 mould in 1/400 scale is once again being put to work. The mould have been dormant since last December when Aeroclassics used it to create UPS and Fedex freighters (N173UP and N629FE). They also squeezed a VASP pax out of the mould then as well, and it's nice to see one of the few remaining quality cradle mounts in 1/400 scale reasserting itself. These are nice picks for AC, the Aero Union will make collectors of the Mexican cargo operator glad as this will sit nicely next to the 767-200 from last November (XA-LRC). Looks like AC is getting a grip on their cheat line issues.

​Gulf Air Boeing 707s: G-BFLE & N861BF
Between 1956 and 1978, eight hundred and sixty five 707s were built. Only just fore a brief moment were two of them a part of the Gulf Air fleet. This month, the 707 mould returns for the first time since December 2021 when AC in similar fashion released another pair of 707s in a freighter/pax pair for PIA. The slush-bucket Gulf Airs both feature the 1970's livery which was recently applied to the Aeroclassics A321 mould last month representing the retro jet A9C-NB. Some of the details around the nose of the aircraft look lackluster, but this pair is intriguing. 

Indo-Pacific Boeing 737 Max8s: 9V-MBA & HL8348
Death, taxes, and AC continuing to push a sub-par mould are the three truths of life. Kidding aside, two more Max8s make their way to distributers this month. The only thing saving these is that both airlines represented are legacy carriers. In trying my best to see these through rose colored lenses, the major details look pretty good. Both models seem to have good cheat lines, and the Korean Air sky blue looks particularly nice. With superior moulds out there, and the recent announcement of the NG 737 Max8, there's really no need to spend nearly $100 on two models that are surly to be better executed by either JC, Gemini, or NG in the near future. One other thing of note is that the Singapore Max is a royalty dodging Blue Box release not pictured on this month's flyer...

Wien Air Alaska 727-200: N276WC
Named after founder Noel Wien, Wien Air Alaska holds the title for first airline in Alaska. First starting operations in 1927 and rolling well into the 80's Wien Air Alaska's last decade in existence is illustrated by this 727-200. This was one of the final aircraft that Wien Air Alaska operated. Documentation is a bit rough going back on this particular airframe but that likely means it was one of three old Ansett Australia 727s leased by Wien in 1984. The airline folded in 1985. It's nice to see the 727-200 out again, and this model looks to have turned out really nicely. This model seems to have been a very limited addition and is already commanding triple digit prices on eBay.

Alaskan DC-6s: N6119C & N6118C
Two of four supers released this month are displaying Alaskan Airlines liveries. Many may not realize that N6118C suffered a tragic crash in July of 1961. Six people perished when a military charter flying to Shemya Air Force Base in the Aleutian Islands wasn't made aware of problems with the runway lights. The airplane (flight 779) crashed in foggy conditions essentially at the threshold of the runway slightly lower than what was actually safe. This particular recreation looks really good and would be the one I'd have of the two Alaskans. Reason being that N6119C is suffering from some sort of workmanship folly. Just taking a closer look at the nose, it if far, far too pointy. So much so that the front gear leg and support structure don't fit closely to the fuselage. This is a new and growing issue with Aeroclassics as you will soon see. 

Southern Hemisphere DC-6s: PP-YSL & 9Q-CLB
Two more lovely looking DC-6s complete the quartet. The last time a REAL Brazil model was made in 1/400 scale was back in 2005 when a really nice looking Connie registered PP-YSC was sold by Aeroclassics. So now the sole REAL Brazil in 1/400 scale has a mate. This is my top pick of all the Aeroclassics models released this month. In a close second is the equally as niche, Air Congo. In the same breath, Aeroclassics is the only manufacturer responsible for making this airline a reality in 1/400 and has done it twice before. A nice pair of a DC-8 and a DC-6 have already been made but in the later 70's colors. This paint scheme featuring the final colors adorned this DC-6. But by the 1970's Air Congo will become Air Zaire at the had of its creator, the Belgian company, Sabena. 

European Viscounts 700/800: TF-ISU & G-AZNA
Many classic collectors were quick to express their elation at the return of the Viscounts, but were even more glad to see the long awaited British Midland 800. Sadly it seems that the factory issues with over polishing finished castings has carried over to this particular quad engined turboprop. Aeroclassics frequently dabble in the Icelandair pool and in doing so, bring a fellow Viscount operator into the mix. Icelandair brought two of these 700's into operation in 1957 becoming the first airline based in Iceland to use quad engined turboprop airliners. That makes this release quite historical. It also goes to who that there is a significant amount of uncovered territory in this arena. 

Eastern Airlines 777-200ER: N771KW (Flaps up and down config.)
EAL currently has five 777s. Three of these are of the -200 variety and all of them are parked. This most recent iteration of Eastern is slowly gaining ground, but growth has certainly been impacted by challenges in the American airline industry concerning a pilot shortage, a decline in travel due to cutbacks in consumer spending, and the overall cost of fuel. While the aircraft sits idle, at least we have an opportunity at getting the former Singapore 777 represented in the scale. The flaps down option indicates the release will be on the sharp new JC mould. I have high hopes for this one. 

Conclusion: 
I think there is plenty here to be excited about if Gemini can execute. I'm most excited about the F-70, the CRJ-700, and the Saab 340. The willingness to take out some old moulds and to focus on small regional jets is great. This is something only Gemini can do. A step away from tubby old moulds and bland liveries is a welcome change. They're cooking in the kitchen now, let's see if what they roll out with is worth the calories. 

Faucett DC-6: OB-R-846
Let's get something out of the way right now. Aeroclassics is near dead-last in certain category areas in the 1/400 scale airplane hobby. But if you're looking for those usual issues, you won't find any here. The current AC DC-6 mould is bang on and they clearly brought out the special sauce for this stunning Faucett DC-6. I've gone over this model about three times tip to tail and I can't find any significant issues. There is one though, it's pretty clear after really getting into the artwork that the main titles on the airplane are just a tad too low. They shouldn't connect with the cheatline and they do. Besides that though, there isn't much to be disappointed in and this was the first model I dropped into my virtual shopping cart.

ATA 727-200: N770AT
There are two 727s this month and the first of them should probably be the next one you put in your shopping cart. The 727 was an integral part of the the ATA network and we've only gotten one ATA 727-200 and that was in the 80's color scheme released by Aeroclassics back in 2016. The final ATA scheme has finally come to fruition and it looks really good. To me, the highlight of this scheme is the bright pastel colors that indicate to leisure travelers that they've boarded the right plane. Sadly though, Aeroclassics typically use darker hues and this has robbed the model of its true potential. Also, it's pretty clear in looking at the 1/1 that there are no port side windows aft of the rear door. Still, all of the right bits are there and truly are close enough.

Republic 727-200: N274WC
The 80's Republic colors adorn the second 727 this month. There isn't anything remarkable about this particular model except for the fact that it's the only one in this scale. The bland yet unique livery should be an easy one to replicate. It seems for the most part Aeroclassics hit the high notes, but I'm a little concerned about the cockpit printing. The stock photograph is particularly fuzzy in that area. Maybe it's just this particular model, maybe not. This model will look nice next to the DC-9 provided that they were using the same color pallet. 

Air Afrique 737-200: F-GFVK
There aren't too many Pan African airlines. The western based Air Afrique has received some moderately good coverage in 1/400 scale relative to its overall historical footprint. In the last decade Aeroclassics have given us a beautiful DC-10 and strong A300. There are also some DC-8s, a 747, and others in this 70's color scheme in 1/400, but finally arrives the 737 F-GFVK. The green ibex looks great on this little model and is certainly the focal point. The bold and italicized titles seem pretty good and well placed. This aircraft was outfitted with a port side loading bay for large cargo and this detail was not lost on AC. The only criticism I have is the cheatline should be situated just a tad higher so that it most accurately meets with almost the top edge of the cockpit window. One more interesting detail is that this aircraft was outfitted with a gravel strip kit to allow for operations on unpaved surfaces. Obviously this detail doesn't exist in 1/400, nor should it, but one can dream.

Air Algerie 737-200: 7T-VEG
I bet you if someone asked you what the tenth largest country by area is, you wouldn't say Algeria. I also bet if someone asked you to tell them one airline based in Algeria, you may not be able to name this wholly owned government entity. Before us is the latest offering from Aeroclassics. This truly is going to end up being a very rare model. There have only be two other 1/400 scale models made to represent this north African fleet. An Air Algerie 747-200 registered N747WR in this exact scheme was made by AV400 back in 2010 and a gorgeous DC-8 was made by Aeroclassics back in 2016 in the World Airways hybrid scheme. This model has the potential to be the best of the three. The title, cheatlines, and tail icon all look superb. Something should also be said about Aeroclassic's ability  to get Arabic characters printed as finely as this. All is well except that nose cone. It's too big, it extends up the nose of the aircraft too far when it should stop by the time the white potion of the cheatline meets the nose. Because I don't have any Algerian models in my collection, this one is already enroute. It will be a great placeholder until something better comes along. It will likely be a while.

Britannia 737-200: G-AXNC
British charters have never been a central part of my collecting criteria but they some how keep sneaking into my collection. Britannia has gotten a lot of love in recent years with a flurry of new moulds, the 737, 757, and 767 have all been used to bolster the options in 1/400 for Britannia collectors. This particular airplane has never been made in 1/400 but this livery has been done three times before, once by Gemini and twice by AV400. While I believe this is the superior mould, this is easily the most inferior paint job. The red cheatline is a minor disaster at the front. It should extend neatly all the way to the nose cone and instead stops far short of there. Aeroclassics has issues with their 737 noses and it needs to be remedied. I have this model inbound as well. It will likely be a very brief visitor in my collection as opposed to a long term representative.

First Air 737-200: C-FNVK
The selection of rugged 737s this month include First Air's C-FNVK. First Air finally got representation in 1/400 scale exactly a year ago when Aeroclassics released C-FPXD. Now we get a second ambassador for their airline with the instantly recognizable poler bear tail. This to me honestly looks like the strongest of all the 737-200s this month but didn't quit make the cut for me because it is very niche. I certainly hope to have a good reason to add this model someday but it isn't quite "impulse buy-worthy." I'm sure friends to the north will be happy with one. The only visable issue I see is that the gray belly paint is too high. It shouldn't go above the port side cargo bay door of the wing-joint. 

United Airlines 737-200: N9068U
You may be thinking to yourself, didn't we just get a United 737-200 from Aeroclassics in the white bellied Saul Bass colors? The answer to that question is yes, but this time around AC has decided to focus on the slightly altered titles and lower cheatline. The previous example indeed focused on the smaller titles and the higher cheatline. This time around things look good. On a personal note, I don't collect Saul Bass United models. I focus quite strictly on the blue tulip forward so this isn't a high priority model for me. It is interesting though to see how many United Jets Aeroclassics continues to make and this speaks to the vast fleets and liveries of this U.S. legacy carrier. 

Continental Airlines DC-9-30: N17531
The Aeroclassics DC-9-30 mould is a real treat. Before the acquisition by United, Continental DC-9s were common site at my childhood home airport in Buffalo, NY.  The last time a decent Continental DC-9 was released was by Gemini Jets back in 2004. It is long past time we see this livery on the sharp AC mould and this month we not only get the standard scheme but the Continental "Lite" scheme as well. More on that in just a second. This particular airplane is line number 394. As it was a much deeper catalogue order, this plane was first delivered to Swissair in 1968. The airplane was sold to Texas International Airlines in 1980 and was then leased to Continental in 1982. The aircraft was swapped around between TIA, Eastern, and Continental for the next two decades before being leased to Aeropostal, and the retired in 2006. The model looks to be almost bang on except, like the First Air 737, the gray belly line is just a bit too high and shouldn't go beyond the bottom of the port-side door. I can't wait to have a closer look when my copy arrives. 

Continental Lite DC-9:30: N18513
While Aeroclassics had it's DC-9 mould out they must have figured it would be a good idea to add a never before represented brand in 1/400. Continental Lite was introduced in 1993 to enable Continental Airlines to better compete with the emergence of American LCCs like AirTran. The goal was to focus on cities that Continental already served out of central hubs like Cleveland. DC-9s, and 737s were stripped of their first class seats in favor of an all economy layout. This operation didn't last long however. As leadership inside the company changed, Continental ended it's commitment to the CALite brand. The model is identical to it's sibling and this is also affected by the slightly higher than appropriate belly paint. Even still, this is the one and only Continental Lite model in 1/400.

Aerolyon DC-10-30: F-BTDD
Based in Lyon, France, Aerolyon began long distance charter service from high density populations in France to the Caribbean, West Indies, and overseas territories in 1996. The airline never grew beyond three DC-10s. This is another very niche aircraft. I'm not sure how this model serves the interest of any more than a few dozen collectors. The color pallet is nice, but not overly eye catching. There is a lot of white and empty space on this aircraft. I have no real interest in this particular model, but I don't want to downplay its importance to others. The mould itself as we know is stellar and the main details on the model are really good. 

Philippine Airlines F27: PI-C516
If for some reason you were hoping to pick up a prop jet this month and the Faucett didn't whet you whistle, then you still have a lovely F27 in the PAL 60's colors to think about. Last month two American F27s were distributed and AC wasn't quite finished with the mould it seems. It really is quite a shame that Aeroclassics isn't interested in  even trying to print on certain details. This little mould is stellar, but how much snappier could it be if some detail was printed on to those engine cowlings? This continues to be a lost opportunity. Either way, the model itself looks decent enough. The main stripe along the fuselage looks like it's right where it should be. The flag of the Philippines is a little large and lacks some crispness. The PAL logo on the rear port-side fuselage looks really nice and the colors actually look really good. I don't dabble in PAL very much and so this one will go on the long list. I'm somewhat sad to skip over it for now, but with prices on everything on the rise, one must become even more discerning. 

Conclusion:
There is no doubt about the quality of the selection this month. AC remains unbeaten in both the diversity of airlines (12) and regions represented (6) as well as moulds used (6). I doubt there are many folks out there who took a look at this month's releases and were able to pass on everything. I will say I wasn't quite as thrilled as I thought I'd be. The DC-10 is rather bland, and some of these models have errors and certainly aren't worthy of the continually rising price points. I don't know why AC has struggled getting the windows right on so many recent releases. The VASP from a few months back comes to mind.

For a second I was thinking I'd finally see that Air Niagara 727. I hope in the coming months we see more DC-10s, perhaps some A300s, and Tu-154s. I really hope we haven't seen the last of the 727-100s but it was clear AC was struggling with the mould. 

I have seven twelve of these models enroute. Unpacking them should be a happy weekend activity. I really have my fingers crossed that the quality control team has put in good work. It has been a long while since I've purchased Aeroclassics models in mass like this and I'm holding my breath that I won't have to endure the sting of shoddy workmanship. American Airlines 737-800: N838NN (One World) & N306NY
NG Models must notice when they look at the books how well American Airlines models sell. This pair will be very popular with U.S. collectors considering that these models should be well beyond what Gemini has been doing. They of course would be the other next most likely producers of these models but they apparently continue to have serious quality control issues. 

Jet2 Holidays 757-200(WL): G-LSAC and G-LSAD
European collectors have been lobbying hard for more from NG Models. While this set probably isn't what most were envisioning, they certify should be good. I think that the NG 757 mould continues to be the very best in their arsenal and it's nice to see the model continue to see regular use. Recent feedback however suggests NG get a bit more choosy with their registration numbers as G-LSAD has been recently retired. 

Air China and China Southern 737-800s: B-1781 & B-5497
There is currently a bit of confusion about which Chinese 737-800s are being released in the coming month. ON social media, three different mock-ups were released but on a separate forum (DAC) NG online announced two of the three. I will roll with the two that were announced. Both of these look really colorful and will probably show up in limited quantities here in the United States. If you're thinking of going for one of these I wouldn't wait.

Conclusion:
There isn't anything exceptionally amazing about this month. The debut of the new 777 mould is fun to think about but if NG haven't manages to shore-up some of the obvious issues with their prototype they could be in for a big of a wash. The highlights for me include the pair of 737s and I'll likely get suckered into the EgyptAir Cargo. 

Air Canada 777-200: C-FNND (Flaps up and down config)
Gemini Jets are thick with 777s this month. This first two of a total four different 777 models in February are both registered as Air Canada 777s, C-FNND. This particular aircraft was delivered to Air Canada in 2008. It has been with the fleet ever since and has been replicated in 1/400 scale once before by Phoenix. One would presume that because this is another of Gemini's split flaps up/down releases, that both models will be on JC Wings stellar 777-200 moulds. But we will have to wait and see because there are reasons to think that the standard version of this aircraft will be on the old GJ mould. More on that later. It might feel as though this is a well trodden path, but it's been since 2011 that we've had a AC 777-200 from Gemini. That model was in the mint 2004 livery. So I must say, this is actually a nice choice, but it won't matter if they go with the old mould. At least the flaps down version should be pristine. 

Alaska (Horizon) Dash 8Q-400: N435QX
For all intents and purposes, this is a rerelease. We already have the Huskies livery on a Horizon  Dash 8, but the 1/1 has recently gotten a refresh. While I'm not at all jazzed by this particular release, the good news is that Gemini continue to see this mould as something with potential. There are many attractive liveries yet to be made, and this is also a nice second chance for those who missed the original distribution back in 2009. 

Asiana Airlines 777-200: HL7755
Gemini does not frequently dabble in the Korean airline market. They have only published two other Asiana Airlines models in the past, an A380 registered HL7634, and an A350 registered HL8078. So, this will be the first Boeing representative of Asiana Airlines from Gemini Jets. This makes this model at first glance the most interesting to me so far. The better news is that it has been about six years since anyone has released a plain liveried Asiana 777-200 (2016, Phoenix Modes), so this isn't a very common aircraft/livery combo. But that's where the good news ends because recently leaked photos on DAC show that Gemini Jets have resorted back to their old cradle mounted 777-200 mould. That makes this model look ancient and priced at $50, makes this a massive disappointment. I think that it also doesn't bode well for the other 777s this month minus the flaps down Air Canada.

Delta Connection CRJ-200LR: N685BR
Gemini Jets have really found their stride with the regional jets. For now, they have the lions share of the market cornered with with various ERJs, Dash-8s, and CRJs. We've been getting steady flow of these models in the recent months and it's nice to see the trend continue. N685BR is a decent choice, but the 1/1 must be starting to show its age. At 19 years old, this aircraft must not have too many work days left in front if it. The only thing to create pause here is the continuing quality concerns that have plagued Gemini on these regional jets. Hopefully there won't be any issues. This will be Gemini Jet's 20th release on their mould and the 3rd Delta Connection scheme they've done.

Conclusion:
Well there you have it. Gemini Jets welcomes 2022 in what seems to be their usual form. While I do hear a lot of disinterest from my peers who collect these models, there are a few here that may be worth the money. Gemini continues to sit on the cusp of being all they can be in the hobby. But because of certain continuing issues, they struggle to be true commanders. I'm hoping this next batch of models does well for the company, but they must move on from old moulds!

American Airlines 757-200 "One World": N174AA
This 757 is line number 998, just two away from 1,000 sadly! The aircraft is from this century. It was delivered in 2002 and served with AA until her retirement from pax duty in 2017. The frame was refitted for cargo responsibilities and sent to DHL in 2018. N174AA has only ever been done in 1/400 one time and that version was made by Gemini Jets in 2010. I have that model, and it is a nice piece respective of it's time. It has however begun to tarnish, and I look forward to a suitable replacement.

United Airlines 757-200 "United Merger": N41135
NG Models have spent a lot of time back cataloging the United Airlines fleet and each of it's last five liveries. One Word schemes, Tulip liveries, and even the battleship gray has featured on models over the last years or so. It just makes sense to continue to help completionists in their efforts to upgrade old representatives. This aircraft is line number 135 first entering service in 1999 with Continental Air Lines. The 23 year old airplane is still a mainstay in the United fleet.

Chengdu Airlines ARJ21-700: B-605N
Somewhat confusingly, COMAC began labeling their airplane at 101 instead of just 1. This means that B-605N is the 36th (as opposed to 136th) ARJ21 off the line. The aircraft has operated for Chengdu Airlines since June 2020 and is the second representative for this airline in 1/400 scale from NG Models. This is essentially a rerelease, but I'm not mad about it, the NG ARJ21 Mould form NG is tops.

Late January Announcements:
NG also announced that there are a pair of Aviastar-Tu Airlines freighters in line towards the end of January. One 757-200 registered VQ-BGG and one TU-204 registered RA-64032. These are of no particular interest to me personally but I'm sure will appeal to some.

This is a very sparse announcement from NG however, there are several models that continue to be in limbo for them. I do find it a bit of a breath of fresh air to have a fair fewer models to keep track of this month, and they are for the most part, good ones at that.
